Juneau track heads south for Skyview Invite

Posted: Thursday, April 27, 2000

This weekend 13 members of the Juneau-Douglas track and field team will compete in one of the largest meets of the season.

The Skyview Invitational at Skyview High School in Soldotna boasts a field larger than the state meet in Palmer May 26-27, Crimson Bears coach Tracy Rivera said.

Anchorage Christian Schools, Bartlett, Cook Inlet Academy, Colony, East Anchorage, Glennallen, Grace Christian School, Homer, Houston, Kenai, Kodiak, Ninilchik, Nikolaevsk, Palmer, Service, Seward, Skyview, Soldotna, Susitna Valley, West Anchorage, Wasilla and Juneau-Douglas will compete at the meet Friday and Saturday.

The girls' team includes sprinters Sarah Ballard, Annie Fox, Adriana Rodriguez and Meghan DeSloover; distance runners Breea DeSloover and Brandi Weston; and hurdler Emily Krehlik, who'll tackle the 300-hurdles for the first time in competition.

The boys' team includes distance runners Wesley Brooks and Jessie Stringer; high jumper/sprinter Zach Gaber; and sprinters Alan Floresca, Jeremy Carpenter and Cody Bloom.

Rivera said top performers could include Breea DeSloover in the 1,600 meters and 3,200, Stringer in the 1,600 and 800, and Brooks in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Meghan DeSloover, Rodriguez, Ballard and Krehlik could also impress in the girls' 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays, Rivera said.

This will be the first competition outside the region for the Juneau track team, and the meet will give the Crimson Bears a chance to place somebody into the state's list of top times this year. Juneau had one or two people on the list two weeks ago, after the Sitka Invitational, but the current list released Wednesday had no athletes from Southeast listed.
