JDHS DECA members get down to business

Juneau-Douglas High School DECA members recently returned from a successful state competition in Anchorage. DECA, an association of marketing students, emphasizes leadership and communication skills, community service and experience in business and marketing. Members participated in the Performance Based Assessment Conference with hundreds of students from other career and technology organizations throughout Alaska, including Business Professionals of America, Family Career and Community Leaders of America, and Skills USA VICA.

Students participated in leadership workshops, individual business competition events, and performed in the talent and fashion shows.

At the competition, DECA members participated in business problem-solving and decision-making events, with members of the business community serving as judges. The events and award are as follows.


Retail merchandising: 1st place, Maria Melambianakis; 4th place, Julia Roberts; 5th place, Tiffany Wells.

Apparel and accessories marketing: 1st place, Julia Roberts; 3rd place Tiffany Wells.

Quick serve restaurant management: 1st place Maria Melambianakis; 5th place Alan Floresca.


Marketing math: 1st place, Neil Steininger; 2nd place, Tiffany Wells; 3rd place, Justine Trinidad; 4th place, Julia Roberts.

Free enterprise economics: 2nd place, Neil Steininger.

Finance and credit services: 5th place, Donna DeLaPaz.

Advertising and visual merchandising: 2nd place, Julia Roberts; 5th place, Maria Melambianakis.
