Thelma M. Cole

Former Juneau resident Thelma M. "Sarge" Cole died peacefully on April 19, 2008, in Bellingham, Wash. She was 86.

In 1989, she retired from the Alaska Marine Highway System as an officer and crew messman on the Malaspina. She then moved to Maple Falls, Wash., where she made her home until her passing.

She loved her family and friends, playing Yahtzee, her garden and Alaska, her family said.

She is survived by her sister, Norma Jean and husband, Andrew Pea, of Vincennse, Ind.; sons, Walter Deckert and wife, Jane, of Princeton, Ind., Don Day and wife, Linda, of Folsom Calif., Mike Day, of Maple Falls, Wash., and Robert Cole and wife, Margo, of Juneau; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Due to her request, there will be no services. Her ashes will be spread in the Wrangell Narrows at a later date.
