My compliments to the Juneau Empire reporters and editorial staff for recent articles detailing some very positive local stories that might otherwise have escaped our attention. Last Thursday's (April 22) article about Auke Bay School's spring musical presentation of a Philippine folk tale pointed out how these productions are done as a way of increasing our awareness of cultural diversity. You honor their efforts with your front page coverage.
The Friday (April 23) story about JDHS boys soccer co-captain Alex Newton's selfless leadership style and his close relationship with his father was a heartwarming story that few of us would have learned about without your sensitive reporting. Local reporting has been of a high quality lately.
We see a lot of media attention to disasters, controversy and evidence of human failings. It is refreshing to have those dramatic and often negative reports balanced with positive local human interest stories. Keep up the good work.
