FAIRBANKS - The old hospital at Fort Wainwright is being demolished.
The former Bassett Army Hospital was completed in 1953 and served thousands of patients until the new Bassett Army Hospital was completed last year.
The Army had looked into what to do with the old building as far back as 1996.
A study estimated it would cost nearly $50 million to make the repairs necessary to keep the hospital sustainable. That amount exceeded building a new hospital.
The demolition began Thursday. The process is expected to last several months. Contractors hope to have the hospital completely knocked down in July.
