ANCHORAGE - An official with the Nenana Ice Classic has announced the jackpot for this year's winner or winners correctly guessing when the ice will go out on the Tanana River at Nenana.

Ice Classic Manager Cherrie Forness says the jackpot is $283,723. That's down from last year's payout of nearly $304,000.

The ice still hasn't gone out yet, but it's getting close - especially after temperatures hit 71 degrees in Nenana on Monday.

Forness says she's expecting the ice to go out this weekend or the early part of next week.

The Ice Classic was started in 1917 by Alaska Railroad workers trying to pass the time in winter while waiting for spring breakup.
