The USS Blueback docked at the U.S. Coast Guard dock in Juneau in July 1989. The 219-foot ship, with a crew of 84, was in town for five days. The diesel-electric ship was one of only three of its class left in the U.S. Navy at the time. Although the ship gave public tours, Cmdr. Thomas Grassi would not say where the ship came from, where it was going or anything about its nuclear capabilities.
