Juneau Girl Scouts earn prestigious Silver Awards

Troop #6 earned the second highest award in Girl Scouting. Their Silver Award Project earned four Silver Awards, one Junior Achievement and two Junior Aide Awards. The girls worked with city Fire Marshal Rich Etheridge to learn fire safety and prevention. They developed a script to deliver this information in a fun way to Juneau second-graders. The presenters along with Etheridge, Rob Kindred and one of the girls as Sparky (the fire department's universal mascot) went to many Juneau schools to teach the importance of having an escape plan and how to stop, drop, and roll, along with other essential safety tips.

Leaders Billie Jo Gehring and Christina Hoffman, Board Member Chrystal Smith, TAGSC CEO Fran Compton, families and friends were on hand at the Juneau Fire Station on March 4 for the award and certificate presentation.

As part of their project the girls have also participated in other community service projects including the Chief Petty Officer's Annual Senior Dinner, Fisherman's Memorial Blessing of the Fleet, and the Lighting of the Christmas Tree in Douglas.
