ANCHORAGE - The Anchorage Assembly voted Tuesday night for an independent audit of the last months of the administration of former Mayor Mark Begich, now a U.S. senator.
The contract to MRW Consulting Group of Plantation, Fla., will pay up to $50,000 to report on allegations of unauthorized spending and inaccurate fund balances.
The Anchorage Daily News reports some assembly members and new Mayor Dan Sullivan said Begich had not been candid about the city's financial condition when the assembly approved four big labor contracts at the end of 2008, as the economy soured.
Begich has said every labor contract submitted to the assembly was in compliance with the law.
