Crimson Bears score four more softball wins

Sitka, Ketchikan barely test Bears

Posted: Sunday, April 30, 2000

The defending state champions Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears softball team was rarely tested in sweeping region opponents Sitka and Ketchikan at home this weekend.

Friday night the Bears blanked Sitka 14-0 and upended Ketchikan 7-2. On Saturday Juneau defeated Sitka 12-2 and Ketchikan 11-1.

Ketchikan defeated Sitka by scores of 4-2 and 5-3 over the weekend.

Juneau used its usual formula for winning -- aggressive base running and solid defense. Lead-off hitter Kari Parr reached base in nearly every at-bat over the Crimson Bears four games and was a constant pain to pitchers with her penchant to steal bases.

In Friday's win against Sitka, Juneau jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning. Angie Kemp blasted a three-run triple to start the scoring, and MaryAnn Moffet added a two-run double as the Bears ran through their entire batting order in the inning.

A fielding error let Ketchikan jump out to a 1-0 lead during Friday's game, but Juneau came back with two runs off a Kayhi fielding error in the bottom of the first. Juneau put the game away in the sixth when Hilary Turner smacked an RBI single to score Natalie Capacci for a 6-2 lead. Turner scored the final run after stealing both second and third and trotting home on a throwing error at second.

Against Sitka Saturday Juneau took a 6-0 lead in the first inning, twice loaded the bases and scoring on errors.

Miscues cost the Kings on Saturday, as Juneau scored three runs in the first off two passed balls and a wild pitch.

Juneau travels to Anchorage this Wednesday to play all six Anchorage schools (Chugiak, Service, Dimond, Bartlett, East Anchorage and West Anchorage) over the next three days.
