I rode the ferry between Haines and Juneau back in December and counted seven major avalanches that had struck the beach on Lynn Canal between the Katzehin River and Berners Bay. All seven would have taken out the road, and that was before we had the majority of this winter's snow.
Sound off on the important issues at
If a road is built, it is clear that it would be a real shot in the arm for the economy in Haines, as we would have millions of dollars of road repair and snow removal work to do every winter. We also have a wilderness survival and avalanche rescue school here, which could use the extra business.
I hope the Legislature will keep in mind the need for boosting Haines' economy when they plan for the "suicide road" to be built. In fact, perhaps they could charge a toll just for the thrill of driving through the gantlet.
