Military: Water safe at Anchorage installations

Posted: Friday, April 30, 2010

ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE - Officials say water is now safe to drink at Elmendorf Air Force Base and nearby Fort Richardson.

The announcement Thursday came a day after officials said workers found elevated levels of fluoride at the Richardson water treatment plant early Wednesday morning.

The facility provides water to both Elmendorf and the adjacent Army post.

Officials say that as a final clearance measure, members at the installations should turn on all hot and cold water taps and let them run for 15 minutes.

According to officials, the equipment that caused the high fluoride levels has been taken off service. They say state environmental regulators are among those who confirmed the water now meets federal protection standards.
