Martin A. Tengs

Longtime Haines resident Martin A. Tengs died April 28, 2000, in his home in Haines.

He was born March 10, 1919, to Martin and Hildur Tengs in Eugene, Ore., where he was raised on a farm.

Tengs graduated cum laude from Eugene High School and after two years at the University of Oregon, he moved to Sitka where he worked as a fisherman and with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He also worked as a union carpenter and iron worker and moved to Haines in 1952. He then worked as a construction supervisor on the government dock in Lutak and several bridges on the Haines Highway. The following year, he met and married Helen Bergstrand and became the proprietor of the Pioneer Bar. Along with the bar, he was also involved with several businesses including partnerships in commercial fishing, logging and mining concerns.

In addition to his business ventures, Tengs was active in local politics. He was a member of the Haines City Council and the Borough Assembly as well as serving as mayor of the city for two years. He had a tremendous sense of humor and loved to read, play cards and chess and work on crossword puzzles. The lifetime member of the Elks and Moose fraternal organizations was also a pilot.

He is survived by his wife Helen; children Anthony of Juneau, Christy (and husband Bob Fowler); grandchildren Roseann, Chevy and Martin all of Haines, brother ``Bud'' Tengs, sisters-in-law Jean and Muriel; and numerous nieces and nephews all of Eugene, Ore.; his Tlingit family includes Tom and Isabel Katzeek, Smith and Charlene Katzeek, Ruth Kasko and many grandchildren all of Haines.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 4, at the Presbyterian Church in Haines. A reception in celebration of his life will immediately follow the service at the Pioneer Bar.
