For the record books

Letter to the editor

We are doomed, according to the oil companies and others, if the legislators decide to tax them at 25 percent instead of the governor's 20 percent. We have been absolutely bombarded with ads and commercials about how the state is going down the toilet as soon as we up the taxes by 5 percent more than what they agreed to with the governor.

Sound off on the important issues at

At the same time, I'm reading headlines and seeing stories about the record profits the oil companies are recording this year, not to mention the $400 million retirement package one of their CEOs is getting.

Am I missing something? Is it just me? Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture? I have seen crap before, but I think the pile of crap the oil companies are trying to give us deserves some kind of Guinness World Record. At least one legislator claims the ads will have no effect on how he makes up his mind. We can only hope and pray that he isn't the only one.
