Local mail carriers collect for food drive

Posted: Sunday, May 02, 2010

JUNEAU - Local mail carriers will conduct their annual mail food drive for the Southeast Alaska Food Bank and Helping Hands on Saturday, May 8, in Juneau. Non-perishable food donations should be in or hung on mailboxes prior to mail delivery that day. Please do not leave glass items.

"Our goal this year is over 6,250 pounds," said Mark Piotrowski, a city mail carrier. "If every person just puts one can of food in every mailbox, that would help."

Those without mailboxes can drop off donations at any post office, where items can be left with the clerk or in the lobby; or at any local grocery store, including Alaskan and Proud, Fred Meyer, Wal-Mart, SuperBear and Safeway. Cash or check donations may be made out to Helping Hands or the Southeast Alaska Food Bank.

For more information, call Mark Piotrowski at the post office at 586-7744.
