Little League concession burglarized

JUNEAU - Food worth $800 to $1,000 and intended for the Gastineau Channel Little League fund-raising concession at Melvin Park on Riverside Drive was stolen Wednesday night.

"There was probably $300 to $500 of damage done to the door," said Nancy Massey, board member. "I just got done stocking yesterday, so they couldn't have picked a better day. They had to have a car to move all that stuff."

J. Allan MacKinnon, president of the league, confirmed that the small frame building adjacent to the rest room and utility building at Melvin Park was broken into and cases of soda pop and candy bars were stolen.

The food concession is "an integral part of our fund-raising," MacKinnon said. "A case of candy bars in the long run might be a uniform or safety gear for a player." There have been previous thefts, so the league has been lobbying the city for a "more permanent, secure" storage facility, he said. A $50 reward is being offered for information leading to the conviction of the thief or thieves, MacKinnon said. He can be reached at 465-5574.

Blind Summit scheduled for Friday

JUNEAU - A free seminar, the Alaska Independent Blind Summit, is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at Centennial Hall in the Hickel Room.

Issues to be discussed include how difficult it is to get around towns with no sidewalks, eligibility for Social Security, and computer equipment that can help qualify the blind and visually impaired for full-time jobs, said organizer Lynne Koral of Anchorage.

Because a complication of adult-onset diabetes is loss of sight, the seminar will also deal with diabetes. To register for the summit, call (800) 478-9998 in Anchorage. Ask for Sandy Sanderson or Lynne Koral.
