I just received a promotional piece from a retirement newsletter which included "9 Tourist Traps to Avoid." It included the following statement, "Trap: Alaskan cruises. Sadly the ports of call have become fake places that are designed to take as much money from tourists as quickly as possible." It suggests people choose New England or Canadian coastal tours or the fjords of Scandinavia.
This quote is pertinent to the (April 28) editorial and recent other discussions about how to implement Juneau's waterfront plan. We need to build into our plans both the needs and wants of Juneau's residents and the needs of tourists. If we don't, both residents and tourists will lose interest in our downtown. Then what would we do?
