Juneau Fire Department personnel battle flames in April 1984 at the front door of the historic Baranof Hotel. An ex-employee set the fire minutes after he was fired from his job as waiter. The blaze caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage to the building. One of the people who escaped was Ketchikan Daily News Publisher Lew Williams Jr. "I decided to hustle out....from what I can determine, the fire was right behind us," the veteran Southeast newspaperman said. No one was hurt in the blaze.
