ANCHORAGE — Alaska State Troopers say a Big Lake man who disappeared Thursday was found alive and unconscious but died before he could be flown to help.

Troopers say family friends searching in a private plane spotted the missing man Saturday but crashed during the rescue. Both the pilot and passenger survived.

The search began for 44-year-old Gary Swanson after he walked away from his Bud Lake cabin Thursday. Troopers joined family members in the search.

On Saturday morning, friends flying in a plane spotted Swanson lying on his back in a swamp. The aircraft stalled and crashed into trees while making a low pass over Swanson. The pilot had facial injuries while the passenger escaped unhurt.

Flight medics who arrived a short time later were unable to revive Swanson.
