Juneau softball team splits in Anchorage

A hitting problem didn't affect Juneau too much in its 5-4 extra-inning defeat of the Dimond Lynx Wednesday in Anchorage, but it did in the next game, as the Crimson Bears fell to East 5-4 on the first of a three-day, six-game, road trip against Anchorage-area schools.

Juneau (8-2) trailed Dimond 3-1 after the first inning but clawed back with runs in the third and fifth innings, and tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the seventh to force extra innings. Darbee Anderson's single in the top of the eighth scored Angie Kemp from third. Kemp tripled in the previous at-bat.

Aubrey Alt struck out six and walked two in pitching all eight innings.

Juneau cracked eight hits in the game, but coaches said the Crimson Bears weren't their usual hot-hitting selves like in dominating performances against Ketchikan and Sitka last weekend.

``We had a lot of bloopers, a lot of pop-ups,'' coach Steve Squires said. ``The kids just weren't aggressive at the plate. There were a lot of kids left on base.''

Natalie Capacci led the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. MaryAnn Moffet hit 2-for-4, and Kari Parr, Suzanne Parr and Melanie Maus each got a hit.

Against East, Juneau trailed 4-2 but tied the game in the top of the seventh when Suzanne Parr hit a double to score Maus and Andrea Walker.

East won the game in the bottom of the seventh on an overthrow to first that scored a runner from second base.

Walker, a sophomore, pitched the entire game in a losing effort for Juneau.

Suzanne Parr hit 3-for-4, while Kemp was 3-for-3 against the Thunderbirds. Maus and Brianne Mecum hit doubles for Juneau, and Moffet hit a single.

Today, Juneau meets the Service Cougars at 5 p.m. in a rematch of last year's state championship game won the Crimson Bears. At 7 p.m., Juneau faces West Anchorage.

The Crimson Bears conclude their road trip Friday against Bartlett at 5 p.m. and Chugiak at 7 p.m.
