Looking forward to a grueling race

It was great to see your story on the Yukon River Quest. There is nothing quite like paddling the Yukon River 24 hours a day for three days.

The wildlife is awesome - moose standing in the river chewing on the tree roots that are hanging down through the soil where the current has eroded away the bank; ever watchful foxes that are sipping water from the river; bears eating and lazily making their way along the riverbank; otter and beaver that occasionally swim across the river in front or alongside you; and, of course, the birds chirping nonstop.

Oh yes, I almost forgot ... the sore muscles that are screaming at you to stop, the sleep deprivation that forces you to pour glacier-fed, ice cold water over your head, the craving for a greasy burger and a good strong cup of coffee are also part of the 460-mile race.

I've entered the race three times as a sole kayaker and look forward to completing the race again in 2004. Friends say I am a little crazy but then again, they can't sit in a kayak for more than four hours at a stretch.
