Store pulls novelty lighters off shelves

Posted: Sunday, May 04, 2008

FAIRBANKS - A store in Fairbanks has removed novelty cigarette lighters from its shelves after fire officials warned they could harm children.

The lighters look like toy animals, miniature cars, mobile phones, cameras, fishing lures, stacks of coins, markers and doll accessories.

One lighter looks like a rubber duck bath toy and produces a "quack" sound.

Three deaths and several serious injuries have occurred in the U.S. as a result of children playing with lighters they thought were toys.

OK Lumber Ace Hardware pulled the lighters at the urging of the Fairbanks fire marshal.

At least two states have banned novelty lighters.
