Dylan Mahoskey's two-run single started a two-out, six-run rally in the second inning Thursday as the Sitka Wolves edged the Ketchikan Kings 7-5 to gain a split of their baseball double-header at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.
In the earlier game Thursday, Ketchikan beat Sitka 11-1 in a game halted after six innings because of the 10-run rule. The games were part of a busy weekend schedule of high school baseball for the Southeast teams, which saw the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears getting the night off Thursday.
Juneau (0-1) returns to action at 6 p.m. tonight when the Crimson Bears play Ketchikan. The Kings (2-1) also play Sitka (1-1) again at 3 p.m. this afternoon. On Saturday, Juneau plays a double-header against Sitka with games at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. For a complete schedule, including junior varsity games, please see Sports Around Juneau on Page 10.
In Thursday's early game, Ketchikan hit back-to-back homers to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning, as winning pitcher Donald Munhoven hit a two-run homer and Ethan Berto followed with a solo shot. In the fifth inning Caleb Mickel added a solo homer for the Kings, who also picked up two doubles from Alexis Pahang with Munhoven and Robbie Vincent hitting one double each. Munhoven, Berto, Vincent and Mickel each scored twice for the Kings.
In the late game, Sitka pitcher Cory Gould held Ketchikan to just three hits over seven innings, striking out two batters while walking five and hitting one. Ketchikan had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Gould got Munhoven to ground out to third to end the game. Sitka had no extra-base hits in the game, while Ketchikan's T.J. Milner drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double and another run scored on a throwing error in the third inning.
