Free business-crimes prevention seminar

First Bank and the Small Business Development Center will offer a free seminar from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday on preventing business crimes.

The seminar will cover embezzlement, identity theft, forgery, credit card theft and computer card fraud. The FBI will present the seminar, which will be in the Aurora Room at Juneau Airport.

Applications being accepted to summer finance academy

The University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Management, the University of Alaska Southeast and the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp. will host a finance academy in Juneau on June 16 and 17.

High school students will meet from 9 a.m. to noon on both days, middle school students from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and adults from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The sessions on June 16 will be at the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp., 801 W. 10th St., Suite 302. The June 17 sessions will be in Room 210 of the Whitehead Building at UAS.

Joe Hines, a business and finance instructor at UAF, will teach the sessions, which will cover the basics of investing. The finance academy is free, but is limited to 25 students per session. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a certificate for completing the academy.

Smart staffing seminar Wednesday

The Juneau Small Business Development Center will hold a Smart Staffing seminar from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14.

The seminar will assist business owners in finding reliable staff in a challenging job market. Employers will learn about local recruiting sources, hiring techniques, legal requirements, payroll taxes, and employee retention strategies.

The seminar will take place in the third-floor conference room of the Juneau Empire building. The cost is $25. Space is limited; call 463-3789 to pre-register.
