Anchorage man dies in motorcycle mishap

ANCHORAGE - An Anchorage man died after losing control of his motorcycle while apparently trying to run from police, Anchorage police said Sunday.

Gary Marten, 56, was pronounced dead at Alaska Regional Hospital early Sunday. He died of massive head injuries.

Police said he was traveling south on the Glenn Highway late Saturday when patrol officers saw that he was going more than 100 mph. Police gave chase but Marten did not stop.

Police stopped the chase when they noticed Marten approaching traffic. But they said Marten continued to speed.

When he attempted to change lanes, he lost control of the motorcycle, which went across the median, across the northbound lanes and down the shoulder. Marten was thrown from the bike and landed in a grassy area.
