Lifelong Angoon resident Elizabeth Sylvia Frank died May 1, 2009, at Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, with her spouse, Wally Frank Sr., at her side.
Of the Dog Salmon Clan, she was born Feb. 12, 1933, in Angoon to Johnnie (Shark Clan) and Nadja Gamble. She attended Angoon Elementary School, Mount Edgecumbe High school and received an Associate of Arts from Sheldon Jackson College. In her early years, she was employed as a cannery worker in Hawk Inlet. She was later employed and retired as a library aid for Chatham School District.
Her family said she loved going on long car rides with her husband and family members. She enjoyed baking, trolling, putting up fish and traditional foods, and picking berries. She loved and enjoyed family gatherings.
She attended the Assembly of God church in Angoon for most of her life and, when in Juneau, attended the Church of God. For many years she enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher. Her family said she was a "praying woman" and showed and shared her deep faith in God. She often spoke of heaven and her loved ones who passed on before her, they said.
She also loved to watch all basketball, especially when it involved her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Wally Frank Sr.; daughter, LaVerne Frank; son, Wally Frank Jr. and companion, Helaire Echohawk; son, Kevin Frank Sr. and wife, Joyce; grandsons, Jason Frank, Konrad Frank, Kevin Frank Jr., Musa Marenah and Jared Marenah; granddaughter, Alicia Jack; and great-granddaughter, Gabrielle Kay George-Frank.
She was preceded in death by her father, Johnnie Gamble; mother, Nadja Davis (Gamble) Peck; sisters, Johanna Gamble and Jessie Jim; 2-year-old son, Wally; and grandson, Kenneth John Frank.
She is also survived by her siblings Edward (Dorothy) Gamble, Sr., Irene Paul, Pauline (Russell) James, Rose Ann (Stoney) Hotch, Sophie Frank, Ella Bennett, their immediate families and her sister Jessie's children and grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Lamin Marenah, Konrad Frank, Kevin Frank Jr., Patrick Johnson, Jim Anderson, Walter Bennett Sr., Bert Bennett and Leonard Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers are Jenny Jim, Alice Bennett, Jerry Bennett, Mike Tagaban, Dorothy Owen, Stoney Hotch, Albert Kookesh, Matthew Kookesh Jr., Shgen George and Dorothy Gamble.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the Glacier Valley Church of God in Juneau. Memorial and funeral services will be held in Angoon on Wednesday and Thursday, May 6 and 7.
