Juneau artists and arts groups will benefit from federal grants to Alaska from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The NEA granted $553,600 to nine groups in Alaska. Some $458,000 was awarded to the Alaska State Council on the Arts, which disperses the money to a variety of community organizations state-wide.
Helen Howarth, director of the state arts council, said last year it gave 122 grants totaling $480,000 to artists and arts groups in Alaska.
"It looks like right around $52,000 went into Juneau last year," she said.
ASCA awarded money to the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council, Juneau Dance Unlimited, Juneau Jazz and Classics, Juneau Symphony, Juneau International Folkdancers and Perseverance Theatre. Career grants also were awarded to three Juneau artists to develop and present new works: musician Andy Engstrom, writer Nora Dauenhauer and theater designer Arthur Rotch.
Howarth said ASCA uses the federal money to parlay matching grants from the Alaska Legislature. Those matching funds brought total ASCA grants to about $1 million last year.
The NEA provided almost $100,000 directly to eight Alaska organizations:
The Sitka Summer Music Festival was awarded $10,000 to support the month-long annual chamber music festival.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks received $10,000 to produce a documentary on Alaska Native artists.
Koahnic Broadcast Corp. of Anchorage was awarded $15,000 to support Native news and arts radio programs.
The Anchorage-based theater group Out North was awarded $20,000 to support educational art programs for adolescents.
The Alaska Design Forum received $10,000 to support a lecture series for architects and designers.
The Alaska Junior Theater received $10,000 to bring performing arts to families in Anchorage and rural Alaska communities.
