On guard for Southeast

Posted: Sunday, May 06, 2001

I want to thank Juneau's Sen. Kim Elton for sponsoring a Senate resolution asking Congress to fund a new armory for Juneau (Empire, May 1). As the resolution notes, the Alaska National Guard provides critical emergency services and a new armory is crucial for providing such services in Southeast Alaska. Because the Guard in Juneau must move from its present downtown location, it's questionable whether the full-time staff will remain in Southeast without a new armory.

That's why a new armory is so critical. The Senate's 19-to-1 vote in favor of the resolution shows our senators recognize the critical role the Guard plays in every region of our state. Again, thanks Kim for your support and hard work and to the Senate for their support.
