• Southeast Road Runners club -- 25th Magnificent Mendenhall Mud Puddle Meet: Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the University of Alaska Southeast main parking lot off Auke Lake. Nine-mile race starts at 9 a.m., one-mile race starts 9:10 a.m. Info: Glenn Frick, 789-7279.

• Juneau Alpine Club -- Hawthorn Peak climb, this is an 11-mile high-energy output level trek lasting about 12 hours. Required technical gear includes ice ax and crampons. Info: Trip leader Dave Lefebvre, 789-4099.

• Juneau Alpine Club -- East Glacier Trail hike, this is a three-mile low-energy output level hike. Adults with children welcome. Info: Trip leader Steve Kocsis, 790-3175.

MEETINGS / CLINICS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Ultimate Frisbee registration -- The Ultimate Players of Southeast Alaska (UPSEA) is currently accepting registration for the Juneau Summer Ultimate League. • Juneau Alpine Club monthly meeting -- Meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, at the Juneau Alpine Club headquarters, 1136 Slim Williams Way (near Skaters' Cabin). Info: Juneau Alpine Club headquarters, 789-7058.

• Juneau Boys Volleyball Club fund-raising -- The JBVC is seeking donations to help pay the expenses of the program, which teaches young male athletes about six-person indoor volleyball. This is not a school-sponsored sport, so it receives no funding from the schools. This past spring, eight JBVC players and a coach were invited to participate as Team Alaska in the 2002 Arctic Winter Games in Nuuk, Greenland. A JBVC player also traveled last summer with the Goodwill Ambassaders Boys and Girls Volleyball Tour of Europe, sponsored by Sports for Youth Foundation. • Kluane-Chilkat International Bicycle Relay registration -- Forms for the annual 160-mile race from Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, to Haines, Alaska, are now available online at http://www.hainesak.com/bikerelay/. Cyclists compete as solo riders or teams of two, four or eight riders. This year's race takes place on Saturday, June 15. This year the rules have been produced in booklet form, and copies will be available soon in Juneau at both Juneau Racquet Club-Alaska Club locations, the Foggy Mountain Shoppe and at Mountain Gears. The early registration deadline is May 15 and the entry fee jumps from $34 (U.S.) to $49 per rider after May 15. Only 1,200 riders are allowed in the race. Info: Dave Ringle, 790-7249.

• Hank Harmon Rifle Range construction -- The construction of safety barriers for the short range and the long range began on or about Thursday, April 18. One or both of the ranges will be closed to shooting during the contractor's working hours (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) six days a week for a period of up to six weeks. OPEN GYMS / SCRIMMAGES / ONGOING

• Youth open gym -- Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Fridays (May 10 and May 24, open gym on May 17 is canceled) at Floyd Dryden Middle School, and from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays (May 11, May 18 and May 25) at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. • Juneau 4-H spring running program -- The club meets weekly on Thursdays at various times and locations around the city. The club is for runners in grades 1-5 (no kindergarten students this year) and will be led by local runners John and Jamie Bursell. Parents are encouraged to run with their children. The club will meet at different locations each week through July 4 (a schedule was provided at the first meeting), and the season will end with the Governor's Cup Race on Saturday, July 6.
