Pedestrian dies in truck accident

Police looking for witnesses to determine how accident occurred

Posted: Thursday, May 06, 2004

A man was killed early Wednesday afternoon after being hit and dragged by a heavy commercial truck while trying to cross Glacier Highway at Anka Street in the Lemon Creek area.

Police reported late Wednesday that they identified the pedestrian. They could not release his name or any details about him, including his age, until relatives are notified of his death.

Police Sgt. Kris Sell said Wednesday night that officers were not authorized to release any more information until this morning.

Officers working the scene said they responded shortly after 1 p.m. They closed Glacier Highway between Anka Street and the Lemon Creek Bridge to traffic for several hours. Police analyzed the long skid mark that extended from Anka to Tonsgard Court.

They determined that the traffic signals at Anka Street and Glacier Highway were working properly, but they had not determined if the man was in the crosswalk legally, they said. They were still looking for witnesses to the accident.

Conditions were not considered to be a factor in the accident. Officers noted that the weather was dry and warm, and while there was no heavy overcast, there was just enough cloud cover to eliminate glare from the sun.

Police reported that the tractor-trailer dump truck involved in the fatal accident was taken into evidence. The department did not identify the driver or the company the driver worked for. The cab of the truck bore the name of W.R. Tonsgard and Channel Construction.

The Empire called Channel Construction for comment Wednesday, but no one was available to speak with the media.

Wednesday's fatal accident was the second involving a pedestrian at a Juneau intersection in less than seven months. On Oct. 20, 10-year-old Skyler Lee Kim was killed at Mendenhall Loop Road and Stephen Richards Memorial Parkway, on his way to school.

Traffic signals at Glacier Highway and Anka Street were put up in January 2002, addressing concerns related to increased traffic.
