Sorry to see sports reporter leave

Letter to the editor

I am a freshman attending Appalachian State University in the mountains of Boone, N.C., but I graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 2004. I have kept up with local news via the Internet, and was saddened to see that Andrew Krueger was leaving his post at the Empire sports desk.

As a member of the cross country team since moving to Juneau in 2001, I always remember Andrew being a presence at our meets and practices, coming at odd hours of the week and weekends to cover a bunch of high school kids running around various locales in Juneau.

I have always appreciated his devotion to making our sports stories into more than a score card, taking time to talk to us, the athletes, and making our race or preseason practice into an actual story with our names and ideas. He gave every story he covered just as much effort and consideration as the next, from swimming to basketball, and he was consistent in applying his journalistic style so that a practice got just as much attention and effort as the state finals.

He will be missed, and I want to wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
