Two members of Juneau's Aurora Knights synchronized swimming team earned medals at the West Zone Region A 2001 Intermediate Regional Championship meet held April 28-29 in Hillsboro, Ore.
Kimiko Urata and Kaitlyn Bausler competed for the Aurora Knights in the meet, which drew 68 swimmers from the states of Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.
Urata placed first among all swimmers in the figures competition, where swimmers perform four specified maneuvers in front of a panel of seven judges. Urata's winning score was 59.315 points, while Bausler took 21st place with a score of 54.000.
Urata also placed first in the age 12-13 solo competition, posting a score of 63.267 which was the highest score posted for all age groups. Urata and Bausler paired up to perform a duet in the age 14-15 division, with the pair taking third place with a score of 54.733.
This coming weekend, three more members of the Aurora Knights will be in action at the regional age group competition in Spokane, Wash. Johanna Evans, Rose Evans and Sarah Felix will compete in that meet.
The Aurora Knights will host the Juneau Open on June 9 at the Augustus G. Brown Pool. The Juneau Open will feature teams from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, and Bozeman, Mont. There will be a show open to the public in the evening featuring all three teams.
