ANCHORAGE - A project to eradicate rats and restore birds to Rat Island has received an award.
The Rat Island Restoration Project received a Partners in Conservation Award for work to make the 6,681-acre island in the Aleutians free of rats. The island is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Restoring the island's natural habitat will benefit at least 26 species of breeding birds.
Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar presented the award Thursday. It was one of 26 national awards to individuals and organizations presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes conservation achievements.
