Title and firm: Pilot, guide and co-owner of Alaska Fly`N'Fish Charters.
Services: Alaska Fly`N' Fish provides guided adventures, narrated flightseeing trips, custom flights and air transportation to Forest Service cabins, remote lodges and small Southeast communities. The company offers tours to Pack Creek, isolated lakes and streams, the Juneau Icefield, Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm, along with other locations in Southeast. Butch Laughlin's area of operation includes most of Admiralty Island, the northern part of Chichagof Island, the southern part of the Chilkat Peninsula and the mainland areas north and south of Juneau. His special niche is guiding and outfitting brown bear viewing and freshwater fishing trips. All ground tours are authorized under a Tongass National Forest special-use permit.
Biographical information: Born in Washington, Laughlin originally came to Juneau to build a house for his sister in 1976. He never left. Since then, the commercial Bush pilot and certified aircraft mechanic has flown in Bristol Bay, Cordova, Yakutat and most of Southeast. During the winter months, Laughlin keeps busy with his other business, Fine Touch Repair. That company performs automobile and marine body and fender work. Laughlin and his wife, Sarah Dunlap, started Alaska Fly`N'Fish in 1991.
Family: Along with his wife, Sarah, Laughlin has a 27-year-old daughter, Reggi, and an 11-year-old stepdaughter, Annica, living in Juneau. He also has three grown sons who reside in Washington.
Notable: The company prides itself on being a small mom-and-pop airline. It owns one airplane, a five-passenger Cessna 206 floatplane, and has no plans to expand. Over the years, Laughlin and Dunlap have guided trips for a few celebrities, including Bill Gates and the late Charles Kuralt.
Quotable: ``I love showing people the wilderness of Alaska in a quiet and exclusive way.''
Employees: Laughlin and Dunlap.
