President Bush has outlined his plan for an expanded "missile defense" system, calling for reductions in nuclear weapons on the one hand (though keeping enough such weapons to destroy our world) and moving money from nuclear weapons into the Star Wars program with the other. It is estimated that almost $10 billion per year may be directed just for the research on Star Wars. I find this a moral outrage at a time when stories pour in from around the world pleading for help to fight mass starvation, make pure water available, and bring even minimal medical care to Third World nations, especially in Africa where AIDS is devastating a continent and has already orphaned almost 20 million children, as we turn our backs.
Of course, this is not to mention the oft-repeated needs of our own country and the current struggle of a vast number of citizens who cannot pay for medical aid, find a decent place to live, or feed their children.
If you agree that spending money on a so-called missile defense system should not be our first priority, I urge you to call the White House comment line at 202-456-1111 or the congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121 and register your objection. As they say in the news broadcasts, "It's your money."
