Juneau-area anglers saw vastly improved fishing for king salmon last week as the Spring King Salmon Derby got underway.

The average time per king landed for marine anglers in the Juneau area was nine rod hours, compared to 61 hours during the same week last year and a five-year average of 43 hours.

Department biologists say king fishing should continue to improve until it peaks around Memorial Day.
