Garbage report from the roadside

My self-appointed chore for Clean-Up Day was the one-mile stretch of North Douglas Highway before the boat launch. I learned a lot about the buying habits of those who toss or let their garbage blow away.

Sound off on the important issues at

Far and away, beer is the beverage of choice, especially in cans, and especially Natural Ice brand. Favorite chips are Fritos. Favorite candy is the king-size Hershey's chocolate bar. McDonald's is the take-out winner, followed closely by food from the Alaskan & Proud deli. Fishing items are high on the list: Eagle Claw wrappers, herring trays and gloves are abundant. No boat cushions, life jackets or other large items this time, but I have found them in the past.

Some folks realize that litter needs to be picked up, so they dump it in front of people's houses where others can quickly clean it up. Is that thoughtful?

Please remember both before and after fishing to secure all your garbage so it doesn't blow out of your skiff or off a deck.
