Native council hosts community meeting

The community council of Tlingit and Haida Indians is hosting a community meeting at 5 p.m. May 11 for all community tribal members and other interested persons.

The meeting is at the Tlingit and Haida Community Center at 3235 Hospital Drive. Juneau delegates to the council will report on elections and major activities. A buffet dinner and door prizes are also planned.

Postal carriers to collect food

Alaska's postal carriers will collect food for the needy on their routes May 13. A similar drive last year resulted in 66,000 pounds of food collected.

Residents wishing to donate should put canned, packaged and nonperishable food items in a plastic bag and leave it by their mailbox area prior to deliver. Residents can also drop off food at post offices beginning May 11.

Seminars offer nonprofit training

A series of workshops and training seminars for nonprofit agencies are scheduled May 17 and 18. The event will be at Chapel by the Lake and is co-sponsored by Corporation for Public Service, Alaska Association of Non-Profits, United Way of Southeast Alaska, Tongass Alaska Girl Scout Council, SAGA, SERRC and AARP.

The cost is $20 per day, including a continental breakfast and lunch, and the registration deadline is May 15.

Among the topics are situational leadership, working with volunteers, grant writing and promotion.

Festival for beer makers in Haines

Entries for the Haines Homebrew and Craft Brew Festival in Haines this month can be dropped off at the Alaskan Brewing Co. at 5429 Shaune Drive by 5 p.m. May 15.

Participants must bring at least two bottles of each beer they wish to enter. The company will provide labels, packaging and sign-up materials.
