Anyone crossing the border, even on the icefield, is required to check in with customs when they get back to Juneau. Usually they just call the customs station, 586-7211, then drop by to fill out the paperwork and answer questions. The same goes for crossing over the icefield into Canada. Bill Forrest and River Lee-Elkin got clearance through Prince Rupert before taking off.
Ward Air can carry people to the icefield all winter, but by May they trade the skis on their planes for pontoons. In the summer most local helicopter companies will drop trekkers off on the icefield. Charges for the chartered trip range from $250 to $1,200, with up to six people in the helicopter.
