A new launch ramp and expanded parking at Douglas Harbor are open to the public.
Work at Douglas Harbor started last year. Improvements include the new double-lane launch ramp, basin dredging, widening of Savikko Road and additional parking for cars and boat trailers. The existing launch ramp will stay open, and the new launch ramp has been dredged to minus 6 feet.
The contractor was wrapping up the project this week, City Port Director Joe Graham said.
"The launch ramp is functional," he said. "We're going to be figuring out how to delineate parking spaces on the gravel."
The city is looking for funding to add new floats and utilities to the harbor, pave the parking lot and finish widening Savikko Road, Graham said.
Funding for the $4.8 million Douglas Harbor project came from a temporary sales tax approved by Juneau voters in 1998, the state Department of Fish and Game, and the Docks and Harbor Department's retained earnings fund.
In other work, the Docks and Harbors Department replaced the North Douglas launch ramp during the winter and plans to add new access for kayak operations this summer. The department also plans to replace the launch ramp at Amalga Harbor this year.
