HAINES - The Juneau-Haines Reading Council, a professional organization dedicated to promoting literacy, was given honor council status by the International Reading Association. In order to receive honor council status the local council must demonstrate that they have undertaken activites to promote literacy locally, statewide and internationally.

The Juneau-Haines Council recently hosted a teacher forum on content area literacy, established a community book program where local businesses receive a wide variety of books for use in their waiting rooms, by their patients, and supported the IRA membership of another person in another country.

The council will continue to offer forums on teaching strategies throughout the year, and the public is welcome to attend. For more information, contact Mary Capobianco at mary_capobianco@jsd.k12.ak.us.
