Third annual Chilkat River Walk takes place May 16

Posted: Sunday, May 10, 2009

HAINES - The third annual Chilkat River Walk from Klukwan to Haines will start at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 16, to raise awareness about breast cancer and breast health.

The 22.4-mile walk starts at the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium Klukwan Health Center and ends at the Haines Alaska Native Sisterhood/Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall. A bus departs from the hall at 7:15 a.m. to take walkers to the start of the course and it will return at about 10 a.m. with stops at Mile 18 and Mile 14 of the Haines Highway.

Those who don't plan to take the bus should arrange their own transportation. Walkers can choose to walk the entire course, or the course has been broken down into eight shorter legs ranging from 1.1 to 5.3 miles.

This event is open to all, and there is a $10 donation that will go to the Haines Hospice Cancer Travel Fund or to Susan G. Komen For The Cure, a national breast cancer foundation that provides survivor support groups, research and awareness.

During the first year of the Chilkat River Walk (2007), approximately 160 walkers, including 30 who walked the entire course, raised about $2,000 for breast cancer awareness.

"With mammograms being the best screening tool for breast cancer, we chose to have the walk when the mobile mammogram van is in Haines," said Betsy Van Burgh, a WISEWOMAN Program Health Educator at the SEARHC Haines Health Center. "The Chilkat River Walk is a great way to start off the spring by walking for good health. This is a great way to show our support for women with breast cancer. And it's a great way to support each other to become more active and think about wellness."

The mobile mammogram van is in Haines from May 7 to 19, and is sponsored by SEARHC and Bartlett Regional Hospital of Juneau. Women planning to get a mammogram need to remember to schedule early for their clinical breast exams. For more information about mobile mammograms, contact the SEARHC Haines Health Center at 907-766-6300 or SEARHC Women's Health Educator Pam Sloper at 907-766-6367.
