JUNEAU - Aldersgate United Methodist Church invites the community to celebrate Native ministries and its special guests, the Northern Light United Church Tlingit Gospel Singers and dance group, at 11 a.m. May 17 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
"This service has always had a special place in my heart," said the Rev. Judy Shook, who is part Wyandotte and Cherokee. "It helps the greater United Methodist Church to understand and honor the cultural work and ways of life among many different nations in the United States and surrounding area. In the locations that Rev. Shook has served churches, she has connected with the native peoples, to honor their spiritual practices."
In the greater United Methodist Church, Native American Awareness Sunday recognizes and supports the contributions of Native Americans to the church and society. The funds collected will allow The United Methodist Church to partner with existing native ministries and create programs on behalf of Native Americans. Money collected supports seminary scholarships for United Methodist Native Americans and also helps the ministries that offer numerous ways of supporting people's basic needs. Half of these funds will stay in Alaska for Native Ministries.
