FAIRBANKS - Alaska's oldest fair is going back to its roots.
Hoping to turn the tide on four straight years of financial losses, managers of the Tanana Valley Fair in Fairbanks says it's going back to what fairs used to be. Its theme this year is, "Tradition is our Mission."
There will be no Outside entertainment at this year's fair, to be held Aug. 7-15.
Instead, it will have events like a pie-eating contest, a tug of war, a strongman competition, a new quilting division, a "true Alaskan" costume contest and fried Spam.
