Drugs are a problem in Juneau schools

Posted: Monday, May 11, 2009

I want to commend teacher and coach Bill Chalmers for telling the School Board he may resign as coach of the football team if they don't start drug testing athletes in the high school.

As a parent whose child attended Juneau-Douglas High School, played sports, and did drugs, I am still living the nightmare. I'm not sure how many of our former athletes need to be in rehab or at Lemon Creek Correctional Center before the School Board realizes that we have a serious problem with drugs in our high school. Any deterrent to keep kids off drugs should be used, and can also be a wake-up call to unsuspecting parents. We have a huge problem with drugs in our high school and our School Board needs to wake up - or visit our local prison.
