Juneau resident Donald Guy Shira died May 5, 2010, at home with his loved ones. He was 71.
Born in North Washington, Penn., he was a graduate of Karn City High School and held certificates in Wastewater Treatment. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, which included a post on a missile cruiser in the Pacific Fleet.
Prior to his retirement, he was a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator out at Thane Road. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Judo, Habitat for Humanity and church activities. His hobbies were boating and fishing in Southeast Alaska waters and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Quay and Lois Shira.
He is survived by his rivaling high school sweetheart and wife of 48 years, Cecelia Shira, of Juneau; son, Guy (Lisa) Shira; daughter, Robin (Ken) Airozo; grandchildren, Tia, Mariah, Kayla and Cloi, of Wasilla, and Zach and Alicia, of Juneau; brother, Gary (Lois) Shira; and nephews, Billy and Greg, of Arizona.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at Chapel by the Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau.
