JUNEAU - Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assemblyman Mark Ewing has dropped out of the lieutenant governor's race.

The Republican from Wasilla says he will instead back Mead Treadwell, an Anchorage Republican who announced his intent to run on Friday, the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman first reported.

Other Republican candidates include Rep. Jay Ramras of Fairbanks and radio talk show host Eddie Burke of Anchorage. Democrats Diane Benson of Anchorage and Nome Mayor Denise Michels are also running.

Primaries are Aug. 24.
