Home-schooling is always an option

Letter to the Editor

Posted: Monday, May 13, 2002

I applaud the actions of JDHS Principal Deb Morse and the school board regarding the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner issue. Had it been one of my sons who held such a "meaningless" sign, I would make them live with the consequences of their actions - and they would be writing letters of apology to Ms. Morse, the school board, and the community.

The school is an institution with its requirements and regulations made clear to students and their parents up front. If for some reason a person believes those requirements and regulations to be unreasonable, there are methods and meetings in place that allow opportunity to address those issues. Furthermore, if someone believes the school's policies are just too difficult to adhere to, home schooling is always an option.

I don't necessarily agree with all of the school's agendas; nevertheless, when my sons (soon) attend JDHS, I will expect them to respect the school's policies - and also respect the people who have to operate within and enforce those policies.
