JUNEAU - Cathy Muñoz said she's filing today as a Republican candidate for the state Senate in Juneau.

Muñoz, a gift shop owner and former member of the Juneau Assembly, announced in December that she would challenge first-term Democratic Sen. Kim Elton.

She comes from a political family. Her father, Elton Engstrom Jr., and grandfather, Elton Engstrom Sr., both served in the Senate, and her grandmother, Thelma Engstrom, was one of the first women in the territorial Legislature. Her mother-in-law is the well-known artist Rie Muñoz.

Muñoz also announced her campaign team today.

The campaign chairwoman is former gift shop owner Annie Kaill, and the treasurer is Ralph Swap, a former state Department of Labor employee, she said.

Among the members of her steering committee are downtown businessman and former Assembly member Rod Swope, and Deputy Mayor Ken Koelsch.
