John C. Hawk

Kake resident John C. Hawk died May 7, 2007, in Seattle, Wash. He was 51.

He was born Sept. 14, 1955, in East Los Angeles. A Kake resident for nine years, he was the chief of police.

He grew up in Spanaway and went to schools in the Bethel School District, graduating from Bethel High School in 1973. After graduation, he served in the Navy. He grew up very active in the Salvation Army and became a Pastor in 1987.

He and his first wife, Kathy, had five children. In 1990, they moved to Kake where he started his career on the police force as a police dispatch, then a reserve officer. He became police chief in Kake in 1995.

In 1999, he got the job as the police chief in Roy, Wash., at which time John and Ann Melton combined their families and moved back home to Washington. He loved his job and his Roy family, said his family.

He cared greatly for the kids in his community, said family members.

He implemented the drug prevention program at Roy Elementary as "Chief Red Ribbon" and started the Safety Fair promoting outdoor recreation safety. He established the Police and Fire department's Explorer Program for students interested in going into those fields. He helped develop the CARE and GREAT programs promoting a drug free and individual life style.

In May 2006, he retired from the Roy Police Department. Then he began working at Lady Luck Cowgirl up in security.

His is survived by his wife, Ann Hawk; sons, Michael Young and his wife, Terra, Jacob Hawk, Joshua Hawk, Benjamin Hawk and James Dalton; daughters, Danielle Hawk and Victoria Voss; granddaughters, Karlee Young, Mackenzie Young and Autumn Young; grandsons, Isaac Flora and Andrew Flora; father, Thomas Hawk; brothers, Guy Hawk and Matthew Hawk; sister, Heidi Hawk; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were Saturday at Community Church in Roy.
